The most underrated improvement in your home
Laundry renovations are the most underrated improvement in the average Melbourne home, and after 26 years Parine Renovation can say with confidence that no other small project delivers so much practical relief for so little disruption.
The laundry is a room that does real work, often several times a week, yet it is usually the last space anyone thinks about. A cramped trough, nowhere to fold, no space to hang and a floor covered in baskets are everyday irritations that a well-designed laundry simply eliminates.
Small Room, Large Impact
Laundries are typically the smallest room in the house, which means every millimetre counts and every poor decision is felt immediately. The good news is that the same tight footprint makes laundries relatively quick and affordable to renovate. A complete transformation is usually achievable in a fraction of the time and cost of a bathroom or kitchen, and because the room is self-contained the disruption to the rest of your home is minimal.
The design brief is refreshingly clear. A laundry needs to accommodate washing, drying, sorting, folding, ironing and storing, and it needs to do all of that without becoming a dumping ground. Solve those functions properly and the room stops being a source of low-level frustration.

Designing Around the Way You Do Laundry
We start with your routine. How many loads a week? Front loader or top loader, and is the dryer stacked, side by side or built in? Do you air-dry inside during Melbourne winters, and if so where? Do you need a dedicated sorting system, a spot for pet washing, a space for shoes and sporting gear, or a drop zone for school bags? Is the laundry also your back entry, and therefore doubling as a mudroom?
Those answers determine the layout entirely. A household of two with a stacked washer and dryer needs a completely different room from a family of five with a top loader and a permanent indoor drying requirement. Once we understand the demands, we design a plan that gives every task a home and keeps the floor clear.
Trusted Brands & Premium Materials
We partner with leading suppliers to ensure every renovation is built using high-quality, durable materials. These trusted brands help us deliver exceptional finishes designed to stand the test of time.

Joinery, Benchtops and Storage That Earns Its Keep
Custom joinery is what makes small laundries work. Purpose-built cabinetry allows us to conceal appliances behind doors, build a continuous benchtop over a front loader for folding, tuck a slimline broom and vacuum cupboard into a narrow gap, and run full-height overhead storage right up to the ceiling for the things you use twice a year.
The details are where the value sits. Pull-out hampers with separate compartments for lights, darks and delicates. A drop-down or slide-out drying rack that disappears when not in use. A pull-out ironing board. Hanging rail space for shirts straight out of the wash. An undermount or drop-in trough sized for soaking rather than a token bowl. Tap sets with a pull-out spray. Deep drawers for detergents and cleaning products safely out of reach of small children.
Benchtops need to tolerate heat, moisture and chemicals, so we recommend hard-wearing surfaces and easy-clean finishes throughout. Waterproof flooring, moisture-resistant cabinetry, quality hardware and proper ventilation matter more here than in almost any room other than the bathroom, because the environment is genuinely demanding.

Plumbing, Ventilation and the Technical Side
The unglamorous elements determine whether a laundry performs. Correct floor waste and falls, properly installed washing machine stops, adequate ventilation to manage humidity, condensation-resistant detailing and compliant electrical work for appliances all need to be executed to standard. Where a dryer is enclosed within joinery, ventilation must be planned rather than assumed, or you will be dealing with moisture problems within months.
This is exactly why professionally managed laundry renovations are worth the investment over piecemeal DIY upgrades. Parine Renovation uses licensed plumbers, licensed electricians and registered building practitioners on every project, coordinates the trades so the sequence is correct, and stands behind the result with a seven-year workmanship warranty. In a room this small, one badly executed detail is hard to live with and expensive to unpick later.
European Laundries, Cupboard Laundries and Awkward Spaces
Many Melbourne homes, particularly apartments and renovated period properties, do not have a dedicated laundry room at all. European laundries concealed within a cupboard, laundries integrated into a bathroom and narrow galley laundries in converted back verandahs are all common. These constrained spaces are some of the most satisfying projects we take on, because clever joinery and precise planning can turn an inadequate arrangement into something that functions surprisingly well.
Where the laundry shares a space with a bathroom or acts as a rear entry, we design for both roles properly, with concealed appliances, considered storage for shoes and coats, and durable finishes that suit a high-traffic threshold.

Combining with Other Work
Laundries are frequently renovated alongside a bathroom, because the two rooms often share plumbing walls and the trades are already on site. Bundling the work this way usually reduces the total cost and shortens the overall program compared with running the two projects separately, and it lets us coordinate the finishes so the rooms relate to each other properly. If a bathroom project is on your horizon, it is worth asking us to price the laundry at the same time.
Our Process
The approach is consistent across every job. A free in-home consultation to understand your household and your goals. Detailed measurement and an itemised quote with transparent inclusions. 3D-rendered designs so you can see the joinery, finishes and layout before manufacturing begins. Fabrication of your custom cabinetry, followed by coordinated installation. Then a final walkthrough and handover with your seven-year workmanship warranty in place.
Most laundries are completed in one to two weeks on site. We provide a schedule ahead of time, keep the site clean and give you advance notice of any interruption to water supply so you can plan around a few days without a working machine.

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before starting your project with Parine Renovation.
Can a laundry be built into a cupboard or concealed European unit?
Yes, and it works well when it is planned precisely. The critical considerations are ventilation for heat and moisture, particularly if a dryer sits inside the cabinetry, access for servicing and hose replacement without dismantling the joinery, and correct plumbing with accessible isolation taps. A condenser or heat-pump dryer is generally the better choice in an enclosed setup because it does not need external ducting.
Should I go stacked or side by side?
Stacked appliances suit narrow rooms and cupboard laundries and free up floor space, but they require a front loader and they limit you to a smaller benchtop above. A side-by-side arrangement allows a continuous benchtop across both machines, which is the most useful surface in any laundry for folding and sorting. If you have the width, side by side generally produces the more functional room.
Can the laundry be relocated to another part of the house?
Frequently yes. Garages, under-stair voids, adjacent bathrooms and rear service areas are all common destinations. The determining factors are access to water supply, a compliant waste connection with adequate fall, ventilation and electrical capacity. Relocation is a larger job than refitting in place, so we assess feasibility and cost before you commit to the idea.
What flooring and surfaces hold up best in a laundry?
The room needs to tolerate water, heat, detergents and repeated cleaning. Porcelain or ceramic tiling and quality vinyl both perform well underfoot, and we recommend moisture-resistant cabinetry substrates with sealed edges and hard-wearing benchtop surfaces rather than anything that will swell at the joins. Skirting details, sealing around the trough and correct fall to the floor waste matter just as much as the surface selection itself.
Do I have to include a trough and a floor waste?
A trough is not strictly mandatory, and some clients sacrifice it to gain benchtop and storage, particularly where a nearby bathroom can cover soaking and hand washing. In practice most households miss it, so we usually recommend a compact undermount option rather than removing it entirely. Floor wastes and plumbing arrangements must comply with current plumbing regulations, and our licensed plumbers confirm the requirements for your specific setup.
